Your Cable Can Damage Your Keyboard Performance

High-performance keyboards need a stable USB connection. A random cable may look good, but if it is low quality or not tested, it can reduce performance or create long-term issues.

Why the cable matters

Gaming keyboards need stable signal and power.

Modern gaming keyboards with 1000Hz, 8000Hz, magnetic switches, rapid trigger, or advanced firmware send data to the PC very frequently. Because of that, the USB cable needs to provide a stable signal and stable power.

The original cable included with your keyboard is selected for that device. Replacing it with a random cable can change the connection quality, especially with 8K or magnetic keyboards.

The coiled cable problem

Some cables are longer than they look.

Coiled cables can be much longer internally than they appear on the desk. Aviator connectors, extensions, and adapters also add more contact points between the keyboard and the PC.

This does not mean every coiled cable is dangerous. The real risk comes from low-quality cables, poor wiring, weak shielding, excessive length, bad connectors, unstable power delivery, or custom cables that were not tested with high-performance keyboards.

Performance

Polling rate drop

Unstable cables may make 8K polling rate less reliable or less consistent.

Connection

Random disconnects

The keyboard may disconnect, reconnect, or fail to be detected by the PC.

Input

Input delay

A weak cable setup can create inconsistent response, lag, or strange input behavior.

Connector

USB-C port wear

Heavy, stiff, or badly fitted cables can add stress to the keyboard USB-C port over time.

Long term

PCB or power stress

Badly made cables may create power stability risks over time, especially with unstable wiring.

Clear answer

Does every custom cable damage the keyboard?

No. A good custom cable can work fine. The problem is using random, cheap, untested, or badly wired cables. The risk increases with 8K keyboards, magnetic keyboards, USB hubs, front USB ports, and very long cable setups.

M4G recommendation

Use the original cable when possible.

At M4G, we recommend using the original cable included with your keyboard for the best performance and long-term reliability. If you want to use a custom cable, please contact our support first or make sure it is high-quality, properly wired, short enough, shielded, and tested for high-performance gaming keyboards.

Best practice checklist

Before using another cable

Use the original M4G cable when possible.

Connect directly to the rear USB port of the PC.

Avoid cheap or unknown USB-C cables.

Avoid very long cable setups.

Avoid USB hubs for 8K mode.

Ask support before using a custom cable.

If you notice disconnects, input lag, or unstable keys, test again with the original cable.

Protect your keyboard. Keep your performance stable.

A clean setup is important, but performance and reliability come first. Using the right cable helps your keyboard stay stable, responsive, and ready for everyday gaming.
